I don't remember exaclty when sandals became my favourite footwear, but it was probably in the end of 90's. At first I thought I'd conmemorate my longest serving, and favourite, sandals with just a photo, but it ended up becoming a blog post. I bought this pair of sandals a Wednesday afternoon in the end of April of 2003. It was the day that I finished my dissertation for Centre for Youth Ministry, and later that day Manchester United deservedly went out of the Champions League quarter final despite winning 4-3 at home against Real Madrid.
And I've used them since, or almost anyway, until about a month ago or so. In our first year together I obviously wore them in the streets of Bristol, but also Helsingborg, London and Oxford. When I had finished my studies I moved back to Törestorp and Assars, and in the summer of 2004 I moved to Malmö and started studying at Malmö Högskola. I've mostly worn them in Malmö, but we have also been to Gothenburg, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Edinbourgh, New York, Jerusalem and Al Khalil (Hebron) - most of the places where the journey of my life has taken my during these last eight years.
Maybe I thought they would last for ever, but in the end they, like my heart, were broken in the West Bank. And here I am at the Atlanta airport wearing my new sandals, on my way to the streets of Chicago and the Summer Peacemaker Corps Training. And around my are American soldiers on their to or from other kinds of peacemaking missions.
